An unauthorised immigrant's route to citizenship will soon begin in Canada. Marc Miller, Canada's Minister of Immigration, announced that the country plans to implement a wide-ranging initiative that will make it easier for many unauthorised people to apply for permanent status.
The programme, according to Miller, is in line with Canada's aggressive immigration goals, which aim to welcome 500,000 immigrants yearly by 2025 and promote population growth that has significant implications.
The report states that there are between 300,000 and 600,000 people living in Canada who do not have proper documentation, which puts them at risk of deportation because they do not have official status. In addition to people who entered the nation illegally, the planned programme will also cover people who came initially as foreign students or temporary employees and decided to stay in the country after their visas expired.
Minister Miller made it clear that not all illegal people, especially those who had just entered the nation, will be eligible for the programme. It is expected that the cabinet would be presented with a proposal in the coming spring that would outline the procedure for undocumented immigrants to obtain legal status.
This announcement is made against the backdrop of high inflation rates and housing difficulties. In spite of these financial worries, the administration decided to keep immigration at its current level.
