How To Immigrate Through Canada Family Class Sponsorship
You can qualify to be sponsored to become a permanent resident of Canada if you have
family members
who reside there. Please complete our immigration assessment form, and we'll contact
you to go over
your alternatives and eligibility.
What Is Canada Family Class Sponsorship?
Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent
residents of
Canada. You
can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old
and a:
Canadian citizen or,
person registered in Canada as an Indian under
the
Canadian Indian Act or,
permanent resident of Canada.
Who is Eligible for Family Immigration to Canada?
Families in Canada can settle through family sponsorship. In fact, the Canadian
government prioritizes
processing sponsorship applications because it favors keeping families together. There
are numerous
ways for family members who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor a
relative who is
currently living abroad to immigrate to Canada permanently.
The Canadian family member may sponsor:
His or her spouse
Common-law partner
Conjugal partner
Dependent child
Adopted children
Parents
Grandparents
Canada family sponsorship process:
You can sponsor some members of your family to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents
if you
are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and are at least 18 years old. You are able
to live, study,
and work in Canada if you are granted permanent residence status. You must provide
financial support
for a relative who you are sponsoring to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident
once they get
there.
You will receive an Acknowledgment of Receipt, or AOR, once the IRCC has accepted your PR
immigration application. Your application file has been created, according to this AOR.
An "AOR
date"—the day your six months of projected processing time starts—may also be used
to refer to you.
Requirements to be sponsor:
You must be 18 years of age or older.
You and the sponsored relative must sign a
sponsorship agreement that commits you to provide
financial support for your relative, if necessary. This agreement also says the person
becoming a
permanent resident will make every effort to support her or himself.
You must provide financial support for a spouse,
common-law or conjugal partner for three
years from the date they become a permanent resident.
You must provide financial support for a
dependent child for 10 years, or until the child turns 25,
whichever comes first.

Sponsoring Your Spouse
One division of the Family Class of immigration is the Spousal Sponsorship
programme. A
spouse
or common-law partner may be sponsored for permanent residence in Canada under
this
programme by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Immigration, Refugees and
Citizenship
Canada (IRCC) must approve both the Canadian citizen or permanent resident (also
known
as
the "sponsor") and the foreign national (also known as the
"sponsored
person"). The sponsor
and the sponsored person must demonstrate that their relationship fits into one
of three
categories in order to be granted a visa through this immigration programme:
Spouse
Common-
law Partner Conjugal Partner Canada does recognize same-sex couples to be
eligible for
spousal
sponsorship. Inland sponsorship is when the couple is together in Canada and the
foreign
spouse/common-law partner has temporary status in Canada, either as a worker,
student,
or
visitor. An Outland application is generally pursued when the sponsored partner
is
living outside
of Canada.
Sponsoring your Child
Both biological and adoptive dependent children may be sponsored to become permanent
residents of Canada and dwell with their parent(s). A division of the Family Class of
immigration
is the child sponsorship programme. The sponsor and the sponsored person must
demonstrate
their familial ties in order to be granted a visa through this immigration programme.
Before the
adoption is finalised, people whose cases are in the final stages of processing may
start
supporting their child.

The Most Common FAQs about Canada Family Sponsorship
What if my application for sponsorship is refused?
If your request for sponsorship is denied, you have 30 days after the rejection
to file an appeal
with the Immigration Adjudication Division (IAD). IAD appeals are
time-consuming, expensive,
and not always successful. If your case was rejected, you should speak with a
lawyer right away
to make sure your appeal is submitted before the deadline.
What Does “Essential Needs” Mean?
When agreeing to provide for a family member’s “essential needs”, the sponsor
must take care of
basic requirements of everyday living (eg. food, clothing, shelter), and health
needs not covered by
public health services (eg. dental and eye care).
How Long With The Sponsorship Application Process Take?
This will depend on to which Canadian Immigration Visa Office the application was
forwarded, and the
type of family member sponsored. Spouses, common-law partners and dependent
children are
priorities, and can take about a month, whereas parents and grandparents can
take more than three
years.
